An international team of astronomers has revealed in Astrophysical Journal Letters, and in a press conference that was live streamed, the first ever image of a black hole taken in history.

The image is of a supermassive black hole that is located at the center of the distant galaxy named M87, the black hole is 100 billion km across, and is 55 million light-years away from the Earth. The image was taken by the specialized Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), which is a network of 8 telescopes scattered around the world.

“It has a mass 6.5 billion times that of the Sun. And it is one of the heaviest black holes that we think exist. It is an absolute monster, the heavyweight champion of black holes in the Universe.” Prof. Heino Falcke, of Radboud University in the Netherlands, who proposed the experiment, told BBC
