Hubble Telescope Finds An “Evaporating” Exoplanet

A rare and interesting phenomenon

Researchers have found, using the Hubble Space Telescope, an exoplanet that may belong to a rare type of exoplanets called “hot Neptunes“, or Hoptunes.

According to Wikipedia: “A hot Neptune or Hoptune is a type of giant planet with a mass similar to that of Uranus or Neptune orbiting close to its star, normally within less than 1 AU”.

The planet named GJ 3470b, in this case, is so close to its host star that it’s actually evaporating right in front of us. This planet loses mass gradually due to being extremely close to the star it orbits.
